Maybe a stupid question, but maybe somebody has a logical answer.

Will Pulse 6 (knowing I will skip breathing through my nose some of the time) be as effective as Continuous 4 (which is probably what would work best when I am directing my Chorus?)

Or even -- would Pulse 6 work OK even IF I breathe through my nose all
of the time -- if Continuous 4 would work???

I am trying to plan my oxygen for my Sweet Adeline Performances where I am the Director. I can get "C's, D's, or E's" tanks -- and I know the "Tank Duration" from a chart.

Obviously Pulse lasts much longer than Continuous Flow. But I am a mouth breather -- and have to consciously remember to breathe through my nose to get the oxygen. It is getting easier to do this -- because I now "feel" that I need oxygen and will consciously breathe through my nose...but maybe not soon enough!

I have 5 types of portable thingees to use:

1) "E" tank on a rolling cart;
2) "D" tank in a nice black purchased bag rolling cart; Have Regulator 1-8
3) Handi-Aire Tote which holds 2 - "C" tanks; - Have Reg. 1-8
4) "C" tank in a purchased black bag to carry -- Regulator 2-CF and
about 5 Pulse
5) Simply Go Battery -- Only to 2 CF -- Pulse to about 4. I've been
keeping this in the car -- only to use in the car coming and going
from anyway while plugged into the DC of the car. Saves using
the C's or D's.

So ------ that's why I am planning for my performances. The longest at Christmas will be gone from the house about 8 hours!!!! On stage continuous 2 hours.

My husband, although 82 yrs. old, is a godsend! He'll get the tanks I need to where I need them and will help me with the regulator-changes.

I have many lengths of tubing. I've even thought of putting the "E" tank to the side with 25' of tubing......when I walk away, put that in a corner and then use the "D" tank again.

Thoughts???? Helps?????

Great story, Sandy, and exactly what I see all the time. It's amazing if you act like wearing O2 is no big deal and you just do what you do all the time, everyone else responds the same way. I find that all the time. I am leaving for Michigan where I'll do two accreditation surveys and I know when I walk in the organizations with my O2 tank on no one will even look at me funny; they'll just take it all in stride. It all works really well.

You are such a great role model for so many people with COPD! Keep it up!

Here it is March 4th and my Chorus and I just had our very best Show EVER! It was called "Love, Peace, and Barbershop!" and we sang about 7 songs from the 60's. We also had a Men's Barbershop Chorus on our show (but we were better!). We had a full house and the audience loved us! I used my D tank in my black bag and both before, during, and after, absolutely not 1 person said anything about me using oxygen to direct My Chorus!!! My Chorus has gained 8 new members in the past year and we are now at the most members we've had in our 30 years of being a Sweet Adelines Chorus (29 members). More ladies are joining because we are sounding so great!!!! And, of course, nobody cares that the Director is on Oxygen 24/7!!!!!

With my 29% FEV, and continuous mucus (nose and chest), I can't believe that I have never missed any performances or rehearsals in my almost 4 years of being the Director! (I missed 1 rehearsal because my husband had surgery!)

I use my SmartVest faithfully; and I was on a declining dose of Prednisone starting 2-1/2 weeks before my Show. I just call this "doing what I have to do to continue......"

My Chorus is used to my coughing, spitting into a paper towel, and then getting right back the mood of what we are doing musically!

Friday night's rehearsal was especially rough on me....coughing/spitting/not breathing/coughing/spitting, etc. etc. I kept "rehearsing" and then in the back room, I was going to "up" my liter from 3 to 4.........when I saw that I HAD NOT TURNED ON THE TANK -- 1-1/2 HOURS PREVIOUS!!!! So ---- I turned me on to 3L and I was "marvelous!" during the rest of the 3-hour rehearsal!!!! LOL

Congratulations, Sandy! You pulled it off, and I suspect that you were an inspiration to some, and definitely inspired some family members to work harder to get people going again. We need people like you doing the ordinary things that everyone else does while using O2, and you're a great inspiration to us! Thank you!!

Thank you, Penny. Today was my Chorus' final Christmas performance! I made them all........using a full "D" tank set at 3 (while directing). And my D Tank was in a really nice rolling Handiaire Tote bag -- all decorated with Gold Christmas sparkly garland with battery lights. The audiences loved the oxygen cart I pulled everywhere! I know that I was probably an inspiration to other old people who don't think they can do anything while on oxygen!!!

I had a chair directly in front of me, to lean on inbetween songs -- plus sitting during a couple of songs while our MC did some jokes. Our programs varied between 30 minutes to over an hour.......must've been around 10 of them I'm thinking!

I've very thankful that I have the spunk to "just keep going!" My Pulmonary Rehab also gives me some spurts of confidence when I don't think I can "do it."

Now our Chorus has 2 weeks off -- and then soon, more rehearsals -- and then on January 12th -- my 80th Birthday Party -- with about 60 people in attendance -- and my Chorus providing the entertainment -- about 20 of the ladies will be singing.

2019 will be another fun year........taking it one performance at a time!!!

With that attitude, Sandy, there is absolutely no reason you won't be directing your chorus AND celebrating that 80th birthday! Way to go, Woman!

Press on! We've reached the age were we've got to do whatever we have to do. It's not about rules. It's about analyzing our specific situations and reacting to our needs with whatever tools we have available.

This is mostly for Tony, who suggested I give myself a spurt of prednisone before starting my directing of Christmas performances. I did just that -- started at 20mg x 3, 15mg x 3, 10mg x 3, 5mg x 3, and then 2.5mg x 3. That, along with the use of my new Smart Vest got me through most of our Christmas performances! We are down to 2 of them -- tomorrow night and then again next Wednesday, Dec. 16th. I know I will make it through all of them!

The Smart Vest seems to have been the trigger for almost clearing up the mucus in my body! I'm down to having to cough just a couple of times a day....following one of my 3/day Smart Vest treatments.

I've been going to Pulmonary Rehab x 2 times a week -- up to 11 minutes each on 4 different pieces of equipment. I'm proud of myself!

At almost 80, I do believe I'll be here for my January 14th 80th birthday party........and will be directing my Chorus for our entertainment!

Maybe a burst dose of prednisone starting a day or two ahead of performances?

Thank you, Tony. Actually I am now using a Smart Vest x 3/day @ 10 minutes each. It is to help to bring the mucus into a coughable position. I think it is helping......but this is only a little less than 2 weeks so far.

The chair I lean on has a back -- regular card table type chair with a back. I may have to sit on it between songs for our performances.
I have 2 cases which hold my tanks. 2 - C tanks in 1 rolling cart. A "D" tank in another rolling cart for the 2nd half of the show.

When you say we lose 1 week for each day of inactivity, I believe it!!! My hip (even BEFORE the surgery) set me back a whole lot because I wasn't moving much due to the pain. Then after surgery, recovery takes a bit -- not much moving around again. My Pulmonary Rehab has been helping somewhat.............but I know that I am too impatient.

I'd like to go back onto Prednisone -- and I might have to start a minimal-type regimen. Due to constant wheezing throughout my chest/back, etc. (I have Home Health coming once a week to check on a small wound from 2 weeks ago which we dress 2 times a day. When the Nurse is here, she listens to my lungs ------ same nurse who checked on me after my hip. She says I am STILL wheezing -- same as when she was here for my hip.)

Pulmonologist already said that the mucus is from failing lungs. Ugh!

Have you thought of a stool with a back? Sadly, this is a progressive disease, the progression of which is predictable only in general terms. If your physical activity fell for any period of time after your hip replacement, you might still be fighting to regain your pre-hip physical conditioning. Periods of reduced activity can be devastating. I have heard--and I can pretty well attest to--the view that it takes a week or so to recover your conditioning for every day of inactivity during a period of inactivity.

Do you have a bronchodilator? If upping the oxygen doesn't seem to have much of a positive effect, maybe you have an asthmatic component.

Tony -- I wish I knew what causes my sats to fall so dramatically -- even with oxygen set at 2L. Other times, also set at 2L, they remain in the 90's -- all over the 90's range, actually!

I've been standing up and "directing" my chorus at 3L. If it's a high tempo song, I get out of breath at the end of it. If it's a slower song, I do better -- because my arms and my whole body react differently to a ballad and an uptune! I sometimes have to sit down after a fast song for a bit. Trying to "bite the bullet" and remain standing for the next song is not the smartest thing to do, I've found. I have a chair in front of me -- and I then have to REALLY hang onto the chair -- or just sit down.

I keep wondering why I am so much worse this year than last year. No oxygen last year, but got out of breath while directing. Had a really bad hip last year -- I blamed everything on that!!!! I don't think it was the hip doing me in........think it was just the stupid COPD. My hip was replaced in May 2018 and it is great! But my COPD is much worse. Hate that this is happening!

I find that vigorous upper body activity drive my sats down quicker than slowly walking. Of course that's a very individual reaction, but I am surprised at the relative reaction.

I've been checking my sats quite frequently lately. And I'm being surprised with what they say!

I had been set at 2L during my shower. I felt pretty good coming out and drying off......and then took my sats which were 77.

Another time coming out of the house, going down 4 steps and walking to the car. Before putting on the cannula in the car, I checked again and my sats were 92.......with no oxygen at that point.

Go figure..........I certainly can't! LOL

A factoid that may or may not apply: shortness of breath is not necessarily related to a drop in sats. After all, have you ever noticed what perfectly fit athletes go through after a tiring run? And I can tell you from experience that sats can fall below 90 without any clear sensation.

I sing and play piano/keyboard so I know what you are talking about. I also find that my oxygen need increases with adrenaline or nerves and I've had stagefright for the entire 60 years I've been performing. I don't use an oximeter when I'm performing because it's pretty obvious to me when my sats drop. Perhaps yours is not, but I get short of breath quite easily and obviously. I'm also a mouth breather (deviated septum) but I have trained myself to breath through my nose when necessary. I am sure you can learn to do the same thing with practice. I can't tell you whether you need the oximeter, but I don't use it onstage.

I am quite similar to Sandy9s about breathing through my mouth, problem with pulse, and sat dropping low with shower etc, They are supposed to bring me an E tank tomorrow with a cart. I have had alot of health stuff lately though. would like to get as much as she has on hand for oxygen. I need to get well enough to feel like some exercise.

You can't prioritize what people will think of you ahead of your health. And I say that as someone who worked through that same vanity battle.

I find that vigorous upper body activity is a real sat killer. I have a chair in my shower (actually a walker with a seat) and I take my time.

I think directing your choir in front of your bathroom mirror is a great idea. Play the music too if you can.

I'm appreciative of the helping that several of you are giving to me re: my performances.

While I find it OK to be wearing my 02 while directing the Chorus, I cannot get my head around ALSO wearing my oximeter! Go figure!! I think because when I am directing, I am giving my full attention to what I am doing -- and not thinking about myself. If my oximeter is on my finger, it will be distracting to the chorus because my arms are waving in the air...that's probably why. PLuS, I find that the oximeter doesn't really track well when my hands are moving. I have 3 separate oximeters (table; bedstand; purse). They are all very accurate -- checked against my Pulmonologist's professional one.

But I will have to figure something out about checking my sats while directing -- even in the mirror in my bathroom!!

I am actually still at the point of checking my sats during making supper. I'm up to 4L for making supper, doing dishes, etc. But when I did 4L while taking a shower, I came out of the Shower with a 74 reading on the oximeter!!! So obviously 4L didn't help much!!!

I can't yet figure out what activity causes my sats to fall so much into the 70's. It can happen just getting into my jammies at night! I have been wearing 02 all day @ 2-1/2L/minute. I'll raise it for those specific functions.........

I know I need more 02 when I am out at a function.........BUT EVERYONE IS RIGHT -- I NEED TO CHECK MY SATS MORE OFTEN TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY ARE!!!

Somehow "checking my sats" seems vain to me to be doing often is the only reason I can think of about why I have not been doing this.
Since I am already wearing oxygen, people will probably think I am being a hypochondriac or something, I suppose.

Sandy, you're going to have to try things out and use your oximeter to determine what pulse dose will keep you saturated. I'm a mouth breather too, and most of the time that's not a problem, I can trigger the pulse dose even as a mouth breather. Experiment with it a bit and I think you'll probably be able to do the same. Then, as you practice with your choir, use the various alternatives and see what works best for you.

No one else can know what level of O2 you need for what level of activity. I would suggest you mimic the levels of activity you expect to encounter and note your O2 levels and what the minimum flows are for each level to keep your saturation above 90. Estimate how much that would add up to and then add at least 25%.

Why not use E tank during your performance and switch to pulse the rest of the day.

I prefer a pulse myself. I use continues 2 most of the time and 5 pulse from tanks when exertion.

If you use a pulse and you breathe too much threw your mouth, I would think you would find out in a short order.
