Our Respiratory Class is getting a team together to run in the 10K for the American Lung Association Corporate Cup September 14 in Omaha. I am not sure how well I will fare, but I am going to give it my best shot! I will probably walk more than I will run, and even then, my run will probably be more of a "jog", but I am at least going to get out there and try.
I am going to start training for it now so I don't die that day, so if anyone can give me tips on training for something like this (for a person with lung disease) I would greatly appreciate it. My O2 SATs are good, 99% resting, room air, and 97% while walking/jogging on a treadmill for 15 minutes (used inhaler prior). I am going to Steamboat in a few weeks and doing a bit of hiking, so maybe that will help me get in shape also.
I think the worse part of my breathing right now is all the humidity. I have had a hard time breathing the last few days, like I can't catch my breath all the way. Hopefully in September it will be a bit cooler and not so humid. |

I strongly suggest that you do as much training as possible in the same outdoor conditions as the run. Walking outside is a lot different for many of us, and you need to know what you can do on the streets as well as what you can do on a TM. Take your oximeter with you so you know where your sats are. That said, good for you for trying! There are a number of people with COPD who run/walk various events, including the New York and Boston Marathons; Mike McBride does it pushing his O2 tanks in a baby carriage. So you're joining a pretty exclusive club......go for it!!

My husband is a firefighter/EMT, and he is going to be with me every step of the way...so if I do go down, at least I know I will have someone there who knows what to do . I will make sure to keep an eye on my SAT's, and I will stop if I need to. |

Sounds like you'll have good support, Chris.....the very best of luck to you and let us know what happens. I'll be thinking about you. It's really good to know that there are people with COPD out there who are continuing to work out, get in better condition and have the courage to take on such a challenge. We need more like you to tell their stories. And kudos to your Respiratory Class....is this a group that's been in Pulmonary Rehab? If so, kudos to the leaders of the group! So many times I read about people who haven't been pushed much in PR, and your group sounds like a bunch of real go-getters!
