After about 20 years of about 80% blocked right carotid, I've now reached the critical stage and need carotid surgery on the right side. My angiogram is scheduled for 9/25. I have Severe (31%FEV1) COPD, oxygen 24/7 and I cough up phlegm every day, sometimes many times a day. That is what is bothering me about upcoming surgery.........if I can't cough. Has anyone gone through carotid surgery with severe COPD?

I have cancelled my 9/28 angiogram. I cannot see myself lying flat for more hours than I can lie flat on my back. I need to cough ----- a lot! And you can't cough while lying on your back.

If I were to have surgery, I would certainly break open the incision while coughing.

Add Covid-19 to the mix and it's one more risk I am not willing to take.

I have decided to wait until I have a TIA (and then re-think my decision)...........or maybe a massive stroke would take me all at once. In which case it wouldn't matter!

Hard decision........
